The Logistics Essentials course is an online self-directed learning resource that introduces you to the world of supply chain and logistics, with a focus on the relationships between core operational activities and the collaboration required to keep supply chains functioning optimally.
The Essentials Series provides the baseline training that is required to perform in a frontline role and serves as a foundation for a career in logistics and supply chain management.
This is also a valuable resource for practitioners who have worked within one SCL sector, such as transportation or warehousing, as it promotes their awareness of how all other sectors within the SCL world function, enhancing their ability to explore lateral cross-sector career opportunities.
The objective of this course is to:
- Provide operations staff with baseline training on supply chain operations
- Build basic knowledge and skill sets in logistics and supply chain
- Address specific knowledge gaps and hone current skills
- Develop an integrated picture of logistics and supply chains.
This series meets a variety of employee development needs, whether they are:
- Orientation for new hires
- Practical, applied training for frontline employees, or
- Bridging the gap between school and work in the logistics field
Course Delivery & Access
The Logistics Essentials course is delivered online, allowing the access and flexibility needed to support learning and development in today’s fast-paced business environment.
This course consists of 5 lessons, with 30 days’ access provided to complete it. Each lesson takes an average of 6-8 hours to complete. There is a multiple-choice test at the end of each lesson. Once this course is successfully completed, a certificate of completion will be issued to you.
An official receipt will be issued to all participants under CRA guidelines, to be used for income tax purposes.
This section examines the meaning of logistics and its relevance to everyday life. It introduces the basic logistics sub-sectors: warehousing & distribution, traffic & transportation, purchasing, inventory management and control, and production materials movement. The lesson reviews, in detail, the process that a single item goes through from its raw material stage to its final distribution to the consumer. Finally, you learn about the basics of customer service and customer satisfaction, and also about users and suppliers of logistics services.
2. Warehousing & Distribution
This section further examines the logistics sub-sectors – warehousing & distribution. You will learn to define warehousing and distribution as it relates to the other sub-sectors, and to identify and describe the roles of warehousing and distribution in logistics. You will also learn about the movement of materials through the warehouse, plant, or distribution centre, particularly in terms of warehouse systems and stock placements. Finally, various types of documentation are introduced, with a focus on the bill of lading. You will learn the basics on how to read, interpret and complete appropriate documentation.
3. Traffic & Transportation
This section further examines the logistics sub-sector – traffic & transportation. You will learn about the various modes of transportation including information on the cheapest, fastest, most dependable, and most available modes. Next, you will learn about various product requirements for transport, including special handling information. The module examines the basics of shipping including documentation, map-reading, routing, and technology. The bill of lading is discussed again, in greater detail.
4. Purchasing & Procurement
This section further develops the role of purchasing as a logistic sub-sector. You learn to differentiate between internal and external customers, and about the financial health of companies. You will gain further knowledge regarding customer satisfaction. In the second section, the module examines and contrasts public and private purchasing, centralized and decentralized purchasing, the purchasing cycle, and technology. Lastly, you will learn about some of the challenges in the purchasing department, as well as the functions and capabilities of the purchase order.
5. Inventory Management
In this section, you first learn the basics of inventory control, and how it fits with the other logistics sub-sectors. You will learn how to describe and distinguish among methods of inventory control to classify and categorize materials, and about the methods of inventory control. The module describes the categories, costs and functions associated with inventory, as well as the inventory cycle. In the second section, you will learn how to use basic technology and how to use spreadsheets and databases to input, read and interpret inventory management and control (for example, to calculate ABC method of inventory classification). Finally, you will learn how to identify and describe the purpose of key principles of inventory management and control, and to describe and demonstrate product movement and replenishment strategies.
