PROCESS: follows an item from raw material stage to distribution to consumer.
LEARNINGS: the basics of customer service and customer satisfaction, and users and suppliers of logistics services.
2. Warehousing & Distribution
Focus: distribution
- define warehousing and distribution as it relates to the other sub-sectors
- identify the roles of warehousing and distribution in logistics
PROCESS: the movement of materials through the warehouse, plant, or DC in terms of warehouse systems and stock placements.
LEARNINGS: how to read, interpret and complete appropriate documentation
3. Traffic & Transportation
Focus: transport
- the modes of transportation
- modal speed, dependability, availability
- product load and handling requirements
PROCESS: basics of shipping including documentation, map-reading, routing.
LEARNINGS: detailed analysis of bills of lading as contracts of carriage.
4. Purchasing & Procurement
Focus: purchasing
- examines the purchasing cycle
- contrasts public and private purchasing, centralized and decentralized purchasing,
PROCESS: differentiating between internal and external customers and achieving customer satisfaction goals.
LEARNINGS: analysis of the functions, uses and legal aspects of the PO.
5. Inventory Management
Focus: inventory control
- describe methods to classify inventory
- identify inventory categories [raw materials, WIP, finished product]
PROCESS: describe product storage and movement strategies, and identify replenishment cycles and methods
LEARNINGS: input, read and interpret data to manage and control inventory, including calculating the ABC inventory classification
